Contributions in memory of Tammy can be made to the Starrlight Foundation she founded via the Delaware Community Foundation. Contact member Hugh Leahy for assistance. John Yeager presented a very interesting program on his Food for the Poor sponsored trip to Haiti a month prior to the devastating earthquake. Yeager, a pharmacist, said Haiti is an extremely poor country of nine million people with 80% of them living below the poverty level. He said the average Haitian family includes three to five children and that it is only possible, at best, to send one child to school as there is no public education. Yeager said Haiti is a beautiful Caribbean country that has great tourism potential if the nation is ever able to improve on its third world status. Jason Bentley won the 50/50 drawing and donated the proceeds to Food for the Poor. Bud Clark reported on the rescheduled CBGC and AG Dan reported on upcoming District events.
There was no meeting on August 17th due to the CBGC to have been held on 8/19 that has been rescheduled to Wednesday, September 8th.
The August 10th meeting was very busy with three presentations including reminders about the CBGC from Chair Bud Clark, Tee Sign Chair Carol Smith and Door Prize Chair Reid Beveridge. Every member was asked to help with two Tee Signs and two door prizes. We also heard about the Sussex County Heart Walk on October 2nd. Click Heart Walk for details. The main speaker was Senator Tom Carper who did a
commendable job of explaining the new federal health care bill. What could have been a contentious issue was not as Senator Carper deftly explained the ultimate purpose of the bill is to improve the level of care and reducing "defensive" medicine (unnecessary tests). Senator Carper is pictured left and at right with VP Jim Rasa and Pres Jan Fraipont.
Pat Barnes gave the club an update on the Grocery Club that received one of our community grants. The Grocery Club provides food to 25 needy families every month. Barnes said she hopes the Rotary funds will enable the Grocery Club to expand to 36 carefully screened families. Food is purchased from the Delaware Food Bank by the case and repackaged so that each family receives a
variety of items. A "Choice Table" of limited items gives the families an opportunity to choose favorite foods, often by the children. Pat shared a heartwarming story about a young boy who selected a cake for his birthday the following day. Linda Price won the 50/50 drawing and donated the money to the Grocery Club. In other business Pres. Jan encourage members to attend the Southern Sussex Rotary's Crab Feast on September 11th. AG Dan provided an update on the new Long Neck Club that is now within one member of chartering. Members were asked to continue working on recruiting foursomes for the CBGC and also Tee Sign sponsors and door prizes. Pat Barnes is pictured above right discussing the Grocery Club with Judy Dean.
President Jan conducted her first Club Assembly on July 27th. Reports were received by Bud Clark, Linda Price and Reid Beveridge about the Clayton Bunting Golf Classic and AG Dan Tabler about District events including the Membership Seminar on September 14th at Mapledale. The highlight was PDG Roger Clavette's recognition of Jan Fraipont and Terry Megee as our newest Paul Harris Fellows. Terry congratulated Paul Mylander on his fourth Paul Harris. Membership Chair Hugh Leahy provided a first reading on a
prospective new member. State Senator Joe Booth provided a Legislative update. Pictured above left (l-r): Terry Megee, PDG Roger Clavette and President Jan Fraipont. State Senator Joe Booth is pictured right.
Paul Mylander introduced Beebe Hospital Administrator Jeffrey Fried who provided an update on the status of the hospital. Mr. Fried was very candid in his remarks concerning the problems the hospital has faced and is facing due to the Earl Bradley case. He expressed confidence that no one at Beebe had any knowledge of the inappropriate things Bradley was doing in his medical practice. Mr. Fried also presented some very positive things happening at Beebe including some excellent evaluations. In closing he said, "... our community will always need a hospital and Beebe will always be there."
Happy Birthday!
